In today's digital age, organisations are becoming increasingly reliant on technology and the internet to carry out their daily operations. From storing sensitive information to managing critical systems, the need for a secure and protected technology end-of-life solution is imperative. This is where IT asset disposition (ITAD) comes into play.

ITAD refers to the process of retiring and disposing of outdated or obsolete technology equipment in a secure and environmentally friendly manner, and is an often-overlooked but critical aspect of cyber security. With the constant threat of cyber attacks, it is essential that organisations take steps to secure their technology assets throughout their entire lifecycle, including their disposal. If not properly disposed of, old equipment can pose a serious threat to a company’s security. For instance, data stored on hard drives can still be retrieved even after the equipment has been discarded – potentially compromising your business’s and clients’ sensitive information.

The goal of ITAD is to minimise the risk of data breaches and cyber attacks by ensuring that all IT assets – such as laptops, phones, desktop computers and other small devices storing data – are handled in a secure and responsible manner from the moment they are acquired until the moment they are retired.

ITAD providers use a variety of methods to erase data from electronic devices, including physical destruction and data sanitization.

What’s the difference between physical destruction and data sanitisation?

Physical IT asset destruction and data sanitization are two distinct processes that are used to address different security concerns when disposing of IT assets such as computers, hard drives, smartphones and other digital devices.

Physical IT asset destruction refers to the process of physically destroying an IT asset so that it can no longer be used or resold. This is typically done by hand-dismantling the item into pieces, shredding it, or otherwise making it unusable.

Data sensitisation on the other hand is the process of securely erasing all of the data stored on an IT asset. This is typically done through the use of data erasure software. At Computer Recycling, we utilise world-leading data sanitization software Blancco. Data sanisitation is often used when an IT asset is being retired or reused and the data stored on it is no longer needed. Choosing a data sanitization option allows businesses to re-market their assets, giving them a second life.
